I use my ZJ with 2" coil spacers for towing sometimes, and when I do, it sags pretty bad with a car trailer. Anyone ever put coilovers on a ZJ to help with sagging due to a trailer? I know it can be done, I really just need to know which ones will fit and get the job done.

 

Prepare for a ton of custom fab work.
You cant just slap coil overs on

 

On a ZJ? In place of the factory shocks? Why not? Good thing is that I am good with fabrication if need be.

 

You need stiffer springs. They will be much cheaper than the coilovers you would need to fix your problem. And they do make coil overs that can be installed without fabrication. The spring on them sit much closer to the shock, although those springs can be cheesy.

i think some people are thinking something different about coil overs.
yes they are just shocks with a coil spring over them, no larger than a shock themselves, really. as easy to install as regular shocks.

you can also install air shocks that don't require on board air. all you do is use an air compressor to add air to make them more stiff.

or yeah, you can swap out to stiffer coils.

i dont care what the factory "rated" it for, ZJs should not tow that kind of weight.

 

I know that a car trailer isn't good for a factory ZJ. That is why I am upgrading the factory suspension. If your next argument are the axle shafts or the transmission, I already know.

 

its not the suspension, its the brakes, and the fact that the ZJ is a relatively light vehicle. put too much trailer behind it, and it will be very difficult to control.

sure the ZJ can do it, but its not a good idea. i towed 6000lb with my ZJ once (had no choice at the time) and i wouldnt do it again. only vehicle id feel ok pulling that kind of weight is at least a half ton pickup, ideally a 3/4 ton.

 

Why not buy a beater pickup and use that to pull it?You can get a used 90s or older 2wd f150 pretty cheap.How much does the car weight your towing?The trailer alone is 2k by its self.

 

ZJ's have 4 wheel disc brakes. Add that to drilled and slotted rotors, and trailer brakes. I think I'll be fine. The reason I posted is to get info about upgrading the factory suspension, not to hear responses saying that my vehicle isn't good enough, go buy a different one. I'll do the research myself, and report back after I'm done.
