WJ NV242: spline count for 4.0 vs V8?

WJ NV242: spline count for 4.0 vs V8?
Hey guys,
A friend of mine recently bought a 2002 WJ with the V8 and the NV242 (really rare combo from what I've seen). Being gung-ho on using it, he's already managed to break the shift fork from what I can see (stuck in 4LO, linkage is good, selector moves through the whole range but doesn't actually shift).
In any case, I have an NV242 from a 4.0-equipped 2004 WJ sitting around from a project I elected to not move forward with.
Do both the 4.0 and V8 models have 23-spline transmission output shafts? Just want to make sure this case will even drop in before starting on it in his driveway tomorrow.
