Possible it could be an internally broken catalic converter

Wow, thanks for the info.

I just had my transmission fully rebuilt 3 months ago, and the shop couldn't figure out what was wrong with my jeep when I took it back in after explaining the problem. They just told me to come back in if it makes that noise again.

So now that I know the problem and I'm covered under warranty with Leon's Transmission, I'll be sure to take it back for them to fix it.

They charged me $2150 for a full rebuild... and it's working great, other than this issue. Wouldn't a full rebuild include a new flexplate?

Not unless it had any signs of damage.

Before you take it back, check the bellhousing bolts. If they are loose, they will cause the flexplate to "flex" a lot more than it should causing cracks in the center section with it eventually breaking out. I had it happen in a Chevy truck I bought after an engine swap.

IF THEY ARE LOOSE, DON"T TIGHTEN THEM! Show it to them and make them replace the flexplate.
