I have a water swiling sound when I first start up. What do you think this might indacate.

 

Checked coolant level lately? Air bubble in the system?

 

Check the coolant level in the radiator. Look for a leak if it's low.

 

Burp it!

 

The level is fine in radiator as will as res. The sound comes from the dash.

 

Jack the front of the Jeep up until the radiator is the highest point of the cooling system. Remove the cap and let the engine run until the t-stat opens and let it run for about 20 minutes longer. Top off the fluid.

 

I highly doubt any of this is necessary, unless it's an older Jeep with a closed cooling system. The need to "burp" an open cooling system is a myth.

OP, we need more information. And I assume you mean "swirling"? Any leaks inside the cab?

 

Really? I had this same issue on my 08 WK - cleared it right up.

 

I can't speak for vehicles newer than like 2000.

 

You can highly doubt all you want, but I have used this method on many Jeeps and other makes and models with great success. This is kind of a don't knock it until you try it situation. So, um, yeah.

 

I guess I haven't tried it because I never needed to. I've redone the cooling system on my '98 XJ, and have had parts of it disconnected before (like doing T-stat), and never once had to burp it. Just run it till it's warm, add coolant as needed.

Last night I worked on my DD which is a 1990 Mazda with an open system. Drained most of the coolant out of the block. All I had to do was run it, the rad cap sucked coolant in from the reservoir as needed, and I just refilled it from there. Running great & no problems.

 

My 97 ZJ made the EXACT noise.. No leaks , clean and filled fluid, noise sounded like it was in the glove compartment.. Jacked it up, burped it, it has been fine ever since..

 

I don't do this method on every vehicle, only the ones that have that cascading sound from the heater core. Some vehicles are more prone to air pockets, even on an open system.

 

I had this problem before I changed my radiator, 02 Grand. Burped it like BustedBack suggested when I refilled it, no more gurgling sound.
