transmssion fluid
any thoughts as to what is the best tranny fluid to use. i've noticed that my shifting is starting to roughen up abit so i thought it time to change my fluid. it's got 192000 and change of original miles so i obviously need something high mileage. any thoughts. oh and its not 4x4

no dont touch it... its to late... youll just clean all the gunk from the seals and the seals will go with it... tranny fluid has to be flushed as per the book... if not then dont touch it... it will last longer if you leave it alone at this point...

Do you know if the fluid has ever been changed before? One easy way is to pull out the dipstick and see and smell the fluid that is in it . Brown and burndt = soon to die.

no i am second owner. and from what i can tell the previous owner took very good care of it. i have been checking the oil and it is in no way burnt or look bad for that matter still has the same nice red look to it. and its not shifting very bad it just not as smooth as it used to be so i figured it time for a change

If I were in his shoes I would drop it and replace the seals/fluid...leaving it as is will shorten the life he can get out of it if he were to do this. Though I do agree I wouldn't change just the fluid and call it a day.

No, this means change it. Its past due. Most people don't understand sometimes not changing the oil (depending on your situation) is better -- because its like a detergent and new oil will cause more problems than save them once you've neglected it that long. Though as I said you can drop it and do a good full flush and replace seals.
P/S since usually anytime you speak of the subject someone asks what type, use Dexron-III/Mercon fluid.

You said the fluid was red, so I am assuming you have an automatic trans?
You also said the fluid looks good, so go ahead and change the trans fluid - no fancy flushes, just a drain and renew the filter package and fluid with manufacturer's specifications. You can see how it runs then.
In the event the seals are wearing, there are additives you can try. But you should be putting into fresh fluid, not fluid with unknown miles on it.
If you want a recommendation, I used Justice Brothers products in my commercial fleet shop, and am running Lucas in my engine now. The engine has 240K miles, and still passes emissions tests with flying colors.

Flush it all off and change your transmission fluid so you won't worry about your oil condition... Then after this you can make your own time table on when you'll need change it again...
