Default Transmission stuck in first

Hi, I am new here.
1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 automatic w/I6
Today, coming home, transmission went to high rpms.
I drove home about 10 miles at 20mph with the 4ways on.
Before I go tearing this out and getting another one, does anyone have any comments as to what just happened.
Is this a simple fix or am I going to replace my transmission?
The car was running rough a few times and also died a few times.
Thank you in advance.

Sorry, not up on shorthand, lol.
What is TPS?
I looked on Google and this is what I think you mean;
Throttle Position Sensor

Okay, I have been doing much reading on Google and the forums.
Have found out where the TPS is located.
Will change that out today.
Learned from the forums how to check the codes on the jeep and it showed the TPS as a fault.
Thank you and will post results later.

Ok, got the TPS off and getting ready to walk to parts store for another.
A quick question before I go.
Would the TPS have anything to do with it smelling like a gas leak?
I had just topped off the tank before all this started.
Thank you
