Question Transmission rebuilding questions

My 42re in my '99 GC is shot. I can get one from the local yard with 80K on it for $450.00.

Or I can attempt to rebuild mine. Which I wouldnt mind trying. So I have some questions.

What tools will I need to do this?
How much should I expect to spend on this?
Any useful websites? Tips?

I dont want to build it up, just rebuild it.
Thanks!

You have picked the one big thing on any Jeep that I would not tackle. The auto tranny rebuilding I will leave to the pros. Sry Mykal!!

Only special tools are various sizes of inside and outside snap ring pliers as far as I know. You need air pressure (compressor) and some picks.

Blow out checkballs and such in passages, mostly in the valve body.

Got ya. I can take the Valve body to a friends house and do that since I dont have a compressor. Or borrow a pancake compressor. Thanks!

There is a major safety issue as well. There is a spring in the overdrive unit that has over 800 lbs of force on it and you have to have a press to get it out. The FSM also mentions that teh alignment of the splines in teh overdrive unit with the main unit is best done with a special tool, not sure about that part, the spring part would scare me though, if it comes out at that force it could kill someone.

I do not believe that I will have to rebuild the O/D unit. IF I do I will be taking anything that needs pressed to a shop to have done.

it has clutches and steels in it as well, why not rebuild it all. the FSM does state not to mess up the alignment of the splines in the overdrive unit, so if you take it off you will probably at least have to disassemble and re-assemble to get it to line back up correctly.

as far as a shop would have to be a tranny shop and you need a press to just disassemble the overdrive, so be safe and careful

You can buy a remnufactured o/d unit from Mopar. Might be worth it to just swap a new one on rather than deal with the press and the special tools needed to do the job right/safely.
