Default Transmission Problem? Probably..Maybe..I dunno

okay.. i have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. all time 4 wheel drive...5.2L
the other day I was at a stop light..I started to go, and I thought I heard a clink noise (like if someone were to drop a bolt on the ground).. It could have just been something that was laying on the street & i just happen to run it over or something..or whatever... OR maybe it could have been something that came from my car.. that fell off or whatever..
So i continued to drive.. about 2 minutes later I hear some weird noise.. not sure exactly where it came from.. but i heard it a couple times.. then I hear some weird grinding sound.. it only lasted for a couple seconds.. But i decided to pull over just incase..
So i pulled over, and checked my fluids and stuff..everything seemed ok..
So I get back in the car, and am getting ready to drive off.. I put the thing in Drive.. push the gas.. and NOTHING.. It wouldnt move..
only way I could get it to go, was to manually put it in 1st gear.. then to 2nd.. then up to Drive (3rd).. It shifts into the gears fine.. but now it just will not move if I try to go when I have it in Drive..
Anyone know what the heck could be going on?? Could something really have fallen off my car, that would make it no longer wanna go while in Drive?
It seems like when its in Drive and I try to move.. it acts like it is in neutral or something..
I dunno.. Im a girl, so its kinda hard for me to explain this stuff.. lol
But if Anyone has a suggestion, as to what I should check first, or what I should look for, in order to know why its having this issue now...
I appreciate any feedback or input.. THANK U SO MUCH!!

Check your fluids. Properly.

"Hot engine, flat ground, and 'in drive' ". You will need help to do this, so you don't run over yourself.

Also, have someone who is mechanically inclined look over your shoulder. He/she may see something that is not obvious to you.

It sounds like your shift linkage dropped the bolt on the transmission. If that is the case, it may only start in Neutral soon.

Also, since you seem to have the sense to try the other gears, I infer that you do this as a matter of course.

How hard were you horsing it?

when in D does it move but seem like it's trying to start in 3rd gear? If so I had the same issue. Changed out all the solenoids in the trans and it works like new again.

I had the sense to try the other gears cuz it won't move when in Drive. The car starts just fine. When I put into Drive it does not accelerate. It acts like it is in neutral. Just revs but won't move. If I shift it to 1st then push the gas, it will move... then while driving I then shift to 2nd and it's fine... I switch it to drive and it's fine... it drives when you manually shift it to DRIVE... but when it's stopped and you try to go from DRIVE it won't move...
I wasn't doing anything hard when trying to go. I gradually push the gas and realized it will not move from DRIVE anymore...

And when checking the transmission fluid... I was told it had to be on flat ground of course but that it was supposed to be in Neutral not in Drive....

Okay, a little tutorial here. On most Mopar transmissions, the fluid pump doesn't run in park, therefore the converter isn't being pressurized and the fluid level will show high. In neutral, the pump pressurizes the whole transmission and the level on the stick drops. That's why you should always check the dipstick when warm and in neutral. Class dismissed.
