Default Transfer Case Model #

I have the build sheet, but I cannot find anywhere on it where is says what model Transfer case I have.

Can someone tell me if it is stampled somewhere? This is the section that I thought it would be in:

DGB All 4-Speed Automatic Transmissions
DGKS 4-Spd. Automatic 42RE Transmission
DHAS Lock-Up Torque Converter
DHRP Single Speed On Demand Transfer Case
DMEP 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle
EAAC All Engines
ERH 4.0L I6 Power Tech Engine

Thanks!

Crawl under there and look at the tag on the transfercase. It's a round red and silver tag with the model number stamped into it.

Great thanks!

I have been under there alot lately,,changed the tranny fluid and filter and found a leaking rear brake line and a rattling catalytic converter, so I will be under there again tonight. I will check it out.

Thanks again!

You probably have the NP249 t-case, which is an AWD system that has 4-Hi- N - and 4-Lo, even though that build sheet states "Single speed transfer case". Look for that on the round red tag as stated above.

Thanks Ol' Blue, I will be working on her tomorrow night and I will check it out. I do have 4hi N and 4Lo on the shifter, so I assume you are correct. This is my first Jeep and I got a good deal, but as you can see with all my various questions, she needs a little work. Nothing major so far!

I appreciate the help everyone gives me!

I do have the NP 249 case. I changes the fluid and sprayed a bunch of PB Blaster on the rusty linkage. The fluid was pretty clean, so I am hoping there are no issues with it.

Thanks for the help!

That's great. A test for the viscous coupler is to find a parking lot, then do slow figure eights with the steering turned full lock. If the front tires make a chirping, or hopping sound or feeling the coupler is showing signs of wear. Doesn't mean failure very soon though, as many have been driven a long time like that.

Well, the vc coupler is definatley bad, it jumps and bogs down just trying to turn into a parking space. ugh!

Since it is the NP249, if I get one from a donor, will it be a direct fit? in otherwords can I just unbolt mine and bolt the new one in? My build date is March 1995 and I have the 42re transmission.

I don't mind putting in a different TC as long as I don't have to switch any parts around. I am not comfortable with tearing into it.
