Hey guys, I have found a 242 from a 98 that, according to my research should be a direct swap for my 249. My question is, not knowing anything about this 242, is there something i can do to check the working order of it before I install it on my jeep? It seems to go through all the gears and doesn't seem to be leaking, but other than that I don't know what to look for. I haven't seen many threads concerning problems with the 242, so am I safe to assume they are pretty bullet-proof? The jeep that it is coming off of is stock, so I doubt its been wheeled hard. Oh, forgot to mention it has fluid, but is a little low, maybe a 1/2 inch. Thanks in advance for your help.

You are correct, in that it is a direct fit swap for the 249. The main thing to look for in either model transfer case is the wear of stretch in the chain. Being chain driven is really it's weak point in design, as it will stretch over time, and replacement chains aren't cheap.

You know, other than the 242 having three option of two wheel drive, there still isn't many option for a low gearing upgrade on either cases. You also don't get a true 50/50 split front to rear, but they do handle awesome for street driving in any condition.

Thanks for the reply. I was all ready to replace the vc in the 249, but I can save 150 by just putting the 242 in. The vc is on the way and I think the additional stress on the front end is starting to wear on some parts. I will probably end up spending the money I save on front end parts.
