Default Synthetic Winch Rope

Anyone got thoughts on synthetic winch rope. My milemarker has 100' of 3/8" steel, thinking of replacing it with friendlier amsteel. Might put 5/16" at 125' on it or maybe just stick with 3/8" at 100'. Amsteel claims the 5/16" stuff is stronger than 3/8" steel.

Anyone got any experience?

I don't have a winch...but I've been yanked out of a tough spot by synthetic rope. The guy who's Jeep it's on says he loves it! Great tensile strength, easier to wind, no re-coil if you do manage to snap it, it just kind of falls down...I'd say go for it...

Later.

stuck with 3/8" by 100' from telico 4x4. They seemed to be about the best price.

What had you found out about keeping it covered and out of the sun? That I have read is the only real weak point. And I have read that the sun damage is false that it does nor have any detremental effect on the synthetic rope. Which is right or do you know ts?

The guy I know with it doesn't do anything special to protect it from the sun, and he's had no problems...he's only had it about a year or so though. I'm not sure what kind of time line you're talking about. I'm sure over an extended period of time the sun would so some damage, just like it does to anything else.

I guess if you're worried about sun damage, you could always get one of those covers for your winch that's like a little bbq cover. I'd imagine they'd be fairly cheap...probably not a bad idea to keep dirt, sun and rain off of it when not in use anyway...

mine is hid inside an ARB bumper so sun exposure is pretty low. THe Amsteel blue is supposed to have a uv protectant on it as well. THey use them on ships so they have to be pretty durable I would think.
