Transmission Temperatures and Oil Flow
OK, got my WJ back today and saw the parts from my overdrive unit. No real damage except they had some pretty good heat marks on them where they had gotten hot. One of teh c clips was destroyed and causingthe parking selector issue.
The transmission shop said they normally remove or drill out the check valve in the line from the tranny to the cooler as it is restrictive and reduces oil flow causing it all to run hotter. Anyone ever heard of this?
I think I am going to add a tranny temp gauge since I do some towing and want to make sure I am not overheating the tranny when pulling even though I have a tranny cooler in front of the radiator as well as the in radiator cooler. Any suggestions on location? Best palce to measure temp i teh pan with a bung or in the return line from the cooler?

I would think the best would be either the pan/bung or line going to cooler as this would give the best internal temp of trans. The return line from the cooler would just tell you if coolers were working.

Putting in the return line gives a pretty accurate picture of how effiecent your coolers are, but no idea how hot the actual transmission is getting.
If you want to know that temp, it needs to go on the line to the coolers.
