Default Stalling issue. Not crank position sensor....

Hello! I am new to Jeeps as well as this forum so thank you for reading and forgive my ignorance of jargon.

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7 which I purchased 5 weeks ago. It had trouble stalling right away and I replaced the crank position sensor with a Mopar part and it did well until recently. It seems to have more problems the more I drive it during the day and never does this in the morning. It simply stalls, sometimes it won't start back up until (I'm guessing) everything cools down. A nice gentlemen stopped yesterday and read some codes for me and I jotted down the description of the faults.

Left Rear Pressure Switch
High Temp Engine Speed Input Circuit
Bank 1 sensor 2 02 sensor

Any advice please. I'm going to try to get a new 02 sensor today but I'm broke right now lol

Welcome to the furum! Glad to have you.

First thing you should know about these jeeps is that they are highly dependent on grounds. That's when you connect one thing to another with a clean and shiny mounting point and a wire. Your battery terminals need to be clean and shiny. The dipstick tube has a bolt that needs to be clean and shiny. The firewall above the engine also has one. And the wire from the negative to the firewall next to it also. Clean them all... sandpaper, steel wool, a wire brush, some cleaner of most kinds, and reconnect. Shiny. Shiny. Shiny.

Best of all, it costs nothing but time and effort. It really does fix a lot of problems in these jeeps. Clean and run it again. You'll probably be surprised how dirty those connections are. Even clean the nut and wire tips. Or cut new ones.

The codes might be a bit more helpful, should be formatted P0000, with various numbers in the place of 0's. Here's a video to get them without a scanner:

You need to check codes. Check all the tune up stuff, open the hood at night and see if the coils or anything else is arcing. You already did the crank sensor but in my limited experience once the crank sensor goes the cam sensor is right behind it. The hallmark of that one is stalling and hard starting, usually after it's warmed up.

Thank you very much for your advice! I will get codes and report back. I am very suspicious about the cam position sensor! I will definitely clean terminals, I have nothing but time haha the weird thing is I can tell when it's not going to start back up because the gauges are all stuck to the bottem left. When the gauges recover it will start. So weird. And annoying.

Ah! Weell that's a definite clue! Gauges being stuck stage left, then it won't start?

Sounds more like an quirky electrical problem, maybe specific to your make and model. Im not familliar with the 2000 4.7, someone else might know?

When it won't start and the gauges are bottomed out, does it still turn over? Do other electrical components work? Headlights, interior lights, radio, etc...?

I was having a similar problem with my 04 Laredo, with the gauges and warning lights not coming to life when I tried to start it. It was the positive battery cable which on my 4,0 has two cables coming out of it. The smaller one was not getting good contact so I cut off the factory cable end and replaced it after skinning back to fresh shiny wire. I was not having any stalling problem with it though, just a dead instrument panel and no start.

Well I didn't get codes today but as far as the gauges go when they act wonky all the dash lights/warning lights/headlights etc all work. Just the guages act weird.

I think BillyBoy has it right - clean all of those grounds. May as well check fuses, relays, and your battery terminal connections while you're at it.

All the gauges are activated thru the PCM, so if they are not active, that means the PCM isn't doing anything. Usually it's the power supply, either the battery cable to the fuse box under the hood (PDC) or the supply wire to the PCM.

There are 2 wires on each battery cable. On the positive (red) clamp, the heavier one supplies the starter directly and the smaller one supplies everything else thru the Power Distribution Center. There is another large red wire off the PDC that goes to the junction block inside the cabin.

Next time you get no gauges, try wiggling the cables at the PCM. You may have a bad connection there.
