Default speedometer ?

Ok 94 gc 5.2 while I'm driving sometimes the speedometer will stick around 40 mph then jump back to the correct speed after so many mph increase or elapsed time. Does it sound more like the gauge itself or the cable? And if its the cable is it connected to the tranny or the rear end?

With the complaint you have it sounds more like the speedometer than the sensor. The speedo is electric and not cable operated. To eliminate the speed sensor, see how the speed control works. If the speed control works properly, the speed sensor is ok. I think you would also get a code if the speed sensor starts acting up. There is a known problem with clusters in the 93-95's and mainly for the speedo going erratic or crapping out, but the speed sensors are known to fail too.

The speed sensor is on the tail of the transfercase, drivers side and forward of the rear driveshaft.

It might just be the cluster itself cuz it also sticks in different speeds as well. But how do I check to see if that is working correctly?

I have a spare cluster that I swapped out, its messed up to but reacts differently, the spare cluster I have does about what yours does. My original cluster always indicate lows with a bouncing needle, about 5% of the time it may work right.

If you can understand how a speed sensor works, I would think it would be impossible for one to stay or get stuck at a constant speed like you speedo is doing.
When I had the dash pad off I could hold pressure on different parts of the cluster to make it change but it didnt necessarily make it work right, maybe since your is sticking try slapping the dash pad above the cluster?
