Something Leaking...Is this bad?
I'm forever looking to solve the problem of the grinding noise when turning, and while i was having a look under the car I found that something is leaking!
What is it?
Is it bad?
Is it likely to be expensive to fix at a garage?
The Jeep doesn't miss a beat and apart from the turning/grind issue there is nothing else. Could this be the cause of that issue?
Thanks

That's your tcase. Yes its bad, no, its not super difficult to fix. Price will depend on the shop. But people have done write ups for tcase work, so you will probably find detailed instructions to help you.
It shouldn't be the source of your grinding, though.

It looks like the one I just changed out in my 99 (242 select tract - right?)
The unit cost me $200 and took a couple hours to change out. I've never changed
one b4, and the hardest part was reaching to two bolts at the top. I did
have the use of a friends rack at his muffler shop and the friend.
Reason for changing:
Mine sounded like it had gravel inside.

Mine is a 99 WJ but not sure about the 242 bit!?
So is it a seal that need doing or does something need to be replaced?

It all might depend too on where the leak is coming from exactly. I would use a degreaser and clean off the area and then watch carefully to see if you can pinpoint the source of the leak better. It might look bad but then again it might be a small leak that has just gone on for a long long time. My transfer case was leaking from the sensor on the side (Bad o-ring) and I fixed it myself.

Good call guys!
I went and degreased the transfer case and found the leak!
Looks like it might not be so serious (as in don't need to replace the transfer case) as its not coming from the case its self!?

So do you think its worth me trying to strip off the old silicone and doing it myself or taking it someone for a proper look?
Would a silicone patch up be good enough?
