96 Zj where's the CAB?
Been checking out my 96 ZJ with the ABS light on and the sensors seem to be OK (both fronts 1.136 K ohms and both rears 1.083 K ohms), but I can't find the CAB (Controller Antilock Brakes). The 96 manual says first that it is under the dash on the passenger side but then says it is at the right side of the steering column on left hand drive models. I don't see it either place although there is a lot of plastic ducting under the passenger side dash and no access to anything above it without removing a lot of stuff.
The 97 manual says it is attached to the hydraulic control unit, but I don't see one there either. I also don't find a 6 way ABS diagnostic connector under the carpet ahead of the shift console where the 96 manual says one should be. What gives? Any of you 96 ZJ guys have an idea where to look?

Both say, and I quote, "The CAB is located under the instrument panel in the passenger compartment. In left hand drive models, it at the right side of the steering column. In right hand drive models, it is near the cowl panel."
My ZJ is left hand drive and the steering column is not in the passenger compartment unless they don't mean actually on the passenger side but just inside the Jeep; otherwise these statements seem to contradict each other. In any case I can't see a CAB on either side unless you have to remove the heat/AC system on the passenger side to get to it.
BTW, I can't hear the ABS pump run like I can on my 90 Cherokee where it runs all the time - a malfunction I haven't solved on that jeep either. I've also replaced the pump relay and the ABS main relay with no change.

where's the Cab on a 96 ZJ
From the link you sent for removing the HCU, 95 and 96 models had a different setup than 97 and later. That must be why the newest DIY code scanners only read ABS codes back to 97 or 99 respectively.
The Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) on 1997-98 Jeep models also has the Controller Antilock Brakes (CAB) unit mounted to it. It serves the same function as the ABS-ECU does on 1995-96 models. The HCU/CAB is removed as an assembly.
I guess I need to get my head up in there and look again. Thanks to tiwvr1 for clarifying that passenger compartment is just inside and not any specific side, so perhaps right of the steering column is the place to concentrate.
I just wanted to clean the contacts in CAB connector and make sure it is tight as a step in the process of elimination since the sensors seem to check out. Just trying the simple things first.

OK, I finally found the CAB or, as a writeup on Autozone's site calls it, the ECU for the ABS. It is way up on the left side wall under the dash behind a huge batch of other wiring and the power steering proportional speed control unit; you have to be a contortionist just to see it. Getting the connectors off is another matter as there is little room to get more than a few fingers up there at a time, and so far I can't pull either connector off. At least I know where it is now and I can try again when my back stops hurting from the first attempt.
