i would like to buy a new set of rims for my sons 03 Grand Cherokee, the rims that I found that he likes are a 16 x 8 with 5 x 127mm hole pattern and a -12mm offset, the online rim guy says that the stock rims are 16 x 7, 5 x 127mm and a +50 or 51mm, he said that this would require a lift, I don't think so??it looks as though they will just stick out of the wheel wells a little (2.5" or so).
I plan to use the stock 16 in tires.

That would be correct, you will want a positive offset wheel for sure. Moving the wheel that far past the fender will cause major rubbing. Even with factory tire sizes. That 4 inches of movement toward and past the fender over stock is the same as putting a very wide tire on the vehicle. I have had several WJ's, my current one is on an 8 inch lift with 35's and I still hit the front rocker a little on the drivers side. Current wheel is a 17x9 with a -12mm offset.
We could try and find a wheel option for you, but if not us I would suggest you stay at least at a +12mm offset.

i need to widen my stance after lifting and putting 31's on, having the same question. so many choices out there. anyone got a link to a set of rims that will stick out? preferably around the 60$ mark and no higher, if possible. for 15' rims (97 grandcherokee)

Yes, mine is just a DD/snow machine/newspaper delivery vehicle. I was going to give it a lift, but then I couldn't reach people's mailboxes! I'd love to have an off-road playtoy but I'm on SS, ya know.
I'm running 265/75/16 on 8 inch american racing wheels with 4 inches backspacing and 0 offset, 2.5 inch lift, 2 inch bump stops. Mostly daily driver, so it rides a bit stiff. haven't wheeled it much lately as i'm getting ready to re-gear and do the rear and front bumpers.
