Default Rear end out?

Think my rear-end on my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo just went out. It was making some noise back there, then she just stopped going and had to coast into a parking lot. Looked underneath there and looked like some fluid came out through the fill plug. Not sure on the extent of the damage as I'm not a mechanic. Not sure if it's the gears in the rear pumpkin, or? Had it towed to the shop, so won't know until next week. From the sounds of it, what would be your best estimate on how much this is going to cost me? Really bad timing to because I was just getting ready to sell it.

to have someone repair it for you? LMFAO!!!! hope you have big pockets!!...... with my past experiences unless you shattered your ring and pinion gears you would lock the rear up you wouldnt be able to coast anywhere. but you can figure about 500 for parts thats if you didnt damage the axles, then around 75-100 bucks and hour per job and id say atleast 6-8 hours for labor..... when it really comes down to it, i would have recomended you tow it to your house purchase a used rear off craigslist or a local junkyard (i got one for my s10 for 150 bucks) and swap the entire rear out, maybe a dozen nuts and bolts remove brakes driveshaft and it should pull out

That may be too much for me. Might be cheaper just to have them swap one out instead of fixing it?

doubt it cause most shops wont swap out used parts. and a new rear will run you close to the 1k range if not more..... just a little idea when i did my s10

i had 6 hours in labor 200 bucks in parts....

to rebuild the rear from a shop i was quoted 1900 (new axles and gears 5 hours of labor)

to replace the rear with a brand new one i was quoted around 2500

might be a little 'high for the shop area but **** isnt cheap

Maybe I'd be better off selling as is to someone who could do the swap thereselves? I was planning on selling anyways, would just like to get at least $1,000 for it if that's possible.

**** i would almost grab a rear and come out there to swap the rear out and drive it back home for a grand lol. i just think a shop is gonna be outrageous for what they want to do the work. thats why i learnt to do my own work lol and always have 2 vehicles so if one is down for awhile i have another to drive... just sucks when they both are down lol....

post up some pics and everything

I'd probably take you up on that too. I actually have 2 other vehicles. Our main one that we always take when we go out of town, and then I just picked up an '89 Ramcharger about a month ago, which is why I was getting ready to sell the Jeep. I needed the money from the Jeep sale to recoup what I used to get the Ramcharger. The shop I deal with is pretty good with me as I do there computer work. I still think though it will cost me more than I prefer.

I may just have to do that. Right now I'd be happy if I could get a grand out of it as it sits. Not sure if I'll be able to recoup the cost of fixing it plus what I need to get out of it. I tried posting in the for sale section here but says you need 25 posts to do so. I figured it would be easier to find someone on here that wanted it.

Ok...so if I'm looking for a used rear-end for this either on here or on Craigslist, what exactly should I be searching for? I'm sure it is whatever came stock on a '97 Cherokee Laredo, but unsure what to look for. Figure I might as well search and see what's out there.
Thanks
Chad

If you call a jy and give them the vin number, they should be able to help you out.
If yours is a 4wd make sure to get the correct gear ratio. Someone had changed
the rear in my 99 to a different (wrong) ratio and with me being a noobie to 4wd,
it took me awhile to figure that out (didn't think anyone would be that dumb).

It is for sure the rear end. They quoted me $750 parts and labor for a used rear end with about 120,000 miles on it. I'm am trying to sell on Craigslist for $1,000 but if that doesn't work then I'll need to anty up the $750 and then try and sell it for more. I am not going to try and tackle a job like that. May be simple for some, but too complicated for me.

Do you not know any friends that could help with this? $750 for a used rearend is absolutely ridiculous. Are they giving you any guarantee that the rearend is any good?

Seriously, you could do the swap in a day even if you knew absolutely nothing about cars.

Well that is including the labor which I'm sure is at least half that. I just don't want to deal with it and figured $1k would be a pretty good deal.

So got it back a couple of weeks ago. They also replaced the rear u-joints. Didn't have any luck trying to sell it as is and figured it would be easier to sell if it is actually drivable. Put it on craigslist for $1,950 and will just drive it back and forth to work until it sells. Maybe will be easier once the snow starts flying here.
