Default Over Drive

Is there a way to lock the overdrive, either on or off?

its a 93 with an auto and a strait six, It has been acting up, its not mine but a friends, and will come in and out or not come in at all giving it a 4 speed basically.

It has a rebuild tranny because the torque converter locked up in 4th gear a while back rendering the tranny useless. and now it has this issue. we would like to be able to lock it in or lock it out if we could

This doesn't make sense to me. "It will come in and out or not come in at all...", but then you say "the torque converter locked up... rendering the tranny useless." Does the trans function but OD doesn't? Will it not idle in gear? Please explain further.

alright, the tranny was rebuilt DUE to the TC locking up. Since then it (about 1000 miles) it has started to have OD issues.

When driving around the city the green OD light on the dash will go on and off and the tranny will "overheat" according to the dash computer. On the freeway it will work then it will go out and just up about 1000 rpms and get horrible gas mileage then it will come back on and work then turn off and so on and so forth to where it finally stays off or stays on. But the computer does not show it over heating.

We have checked the fluid it is not burnt and still has a very nice color. There is no driving issues about the transmission other than the over drive. It shifts clean, it down shifts fine when stopping, it kicks down fine, just the overdrive goes nuts.

If its the AW4...check the OD solenoid behind the trans filter. Mine is having the same issue but im too lazy to replace it. You can get a set of new solenoids for less than $200 online. They are easy to replace but you have to drop the trans pan and filter.

If it's only been 1,000 miles since it was rebuilt I'd take it back to the person that rebuilt it and tell him to fix it. JMO

That is why I took my ZJ to the dealer for a crate tranny with a 3/36 warranty.
