My 2008 wk 3.7 with the nv140 awd tcase is making a funny squeeling/screaching noise. It sounds like brakes but I dont know. I think it might be a bad dry u joint in the rear shaft. I wanted to remove it and drive it around a bit to see if the noise went away. Will this harm my nv140 transfer case? I would not exceed 40 mph. I dont want to burn out my vc. Will this be ok for a short while?

 

I wouldn't drive it with the rear shaft removed, but you should be able to feel if it's bad once you remove it. All you have to do is flex it in your hand.

I know nothing about the NV140.

 

Thanks, after a bit of searching around, I found a thread that claims that the wk will not even move with either of the shafts removed. Of course then I found a thread by a guy whose front shaft went out on a cross country trip and he just removed it and was fine for the rest of the trip. Ill be replacing the tc side cv joint in my front driveshaft soon, as the boot is ripped. Perhaps thats where the noise is coming from. No vibrations just that screaching sound that sounds like something contacting one of the brake rotors.
