Oil for 5.7 Hemi ?
I guys. There seems to be a bit of confusion here in South Africa regarding the oil for the Hemi engine. The general info available points to the 5w-20, but the owners manual sold with jeeps in SA talks about 5w-30- possibly due to our warmer climate.
The thing is, many users on the SA 4x4 community forum have now been using the 5w-20 with fantastic results (fuel consumption). My question is: Will this oil provide adequate protection in a warmer climate?? Using 5w-40 brings up the error code for incorrect oil viscosity btw...

Welcome to CF. Read this info, specially the Notes in the "Engine Oil and Filters" chart for the Hemi engines. (Scroll down). >http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_oil_change.htm
It states it may affect the Multi- Displacement System to use thicker oil.
Just my experience on my vehicles, but in hot weather, I use thicker oil. Use your judgement for your own vehicle.

Very helpful thanks!! I will try the 5w-30 for now and report back on consumption and if I see the little fuel saver mode message on the trip computer !

I typically reference www.amsoil.com for fluid information, along with the manual of course too.
I ran a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L on their page

They are stating 5W-20 for all temperature ranges.
I'm not sure what your temps are, but seeing as though this would cover Texas where we run 110+ F for weeks on end in the summer, seems like the 5W20 should be sufficient.
Using a bit heavier weight should be ok, not surprised the w40 caused issues, that is waaaay thicker than 20. I run w40 on my nearly 30 year old turbocharged engine.

Thanks. That is the first confirmation I have come across that 5w-20 is ok for all temps. Out here it's about -4 deg in winter and up to 40 maybe 45 in summer depending where you go. Mostly around 34 deg. Sorry, I don't do Fahrenheit !

Google "110 f to c"
110 degrees Fahrenheit = 43.3333333 degrees Celsius
So there are Grand Cherokees running around here in Texas in that temp range and I'm sure the dealership/shop is putting 5w20 in on their oil changes.

Cool. I'm gonna run on the 5w-30 now and post a comparison to 5w-40. IF the MDS does not engage I will change to 5w-20 and report back!! Also running 265's which may affect the whole thing.... Will change to stock 245's next year. Thanks guys, great info

The viscosity needs of the engine have to do with tolerances and flow rates where the oil moves through.
People run thicker (heavier, higher weight) oils on older and high mileage vehicles under the theory that those gaps aren't as tight as in a new engine in the hopes that the thicker oil will fill the larger gap and properly lubricate.

No I was referring to the possibility that the 265 may provide additional resistance and therefore prevent the MDS from engaging. Maybe, maybe not. I have never actually seen the message on my trip computer . Should get the Hemi back from the shop tomorrow-- can't wait!!!!
