Mixing oil types....?
Hey all,
I was just curious...is it not a good idea to mix types of oil? What I mean is, I need to change my oil and the last time I changed it, I put in the Quaker State high mileage oil, the one in the red bottle. I like that stuff, but it's a bit more expensive than the normal stuff. Would it hurt if I put in half of that stuff and half the normal QS oil as long as it's the same viscosity? Or would you recommend a different oil altogether? My ZJ is just about at 158,000 miles.
Advice?
Thanks

Just use the cheaper stuff, no need in mixing it. How often are you changing the oil? 3000 miles is too soon and a waste of money, you'll be fine changing it at 5 to 6000 miles.

I never used to be a 3000 mile changer but for some reason my oil goes bad in less than 3000. I haven't even put 3000 miles on it since my last change and it's already black, nasty and thin. It even smells a bit burnt. Most of miles are a town miles with the occasional 300-400 mile road trip to see family. Another reason I think there might be an issue, is my oil pressure has started to drop while at idle. This is a new issue. It never did this til about a few months ago. I realize the viscosity plays a part in that but the amount of the drop concerns me.

Don't mix it, just use what you can afford.
I've owned nearly 50 vehicles of all types, both new and used, and have always changed the oil & filter at 3,000 mile intervals regardless of what the owners manuals called for. An older high mileage engine can have some blow-by past the rings which can break down the oil. Changing it at 3,000 miles not only gets rid of the old oil, but helps prevent sludge build up.
I'd just rather spend money on regular oil changes than on a premature engine rebuild because of lost performance/excessive wear.

I change the oil on the peep every 6000 km +/- 1000 km (6000 km = 3720 mi) using various brands, valvoline, penzoil, castrol, do also like that Q State Hi Mi (when it's on sale). My fav's are the Q State and Valvoline. Always use 10w30 year round. New Fram filter every change. Peep's been treated this way for over 21 years. Will be rollin over 500000 km on the way to work tomorrow. Add about 600 ml top ups between changes, no blue exhaust. Yes the Peep has an automatic floor pan oil coating program in full swing despite various gasket and seals replacements, no sludge buildup. You don't have to purposely blend your oils. Just keep up with the regular changes and your jeep will go on and on.

I've been using Valvoline/Carquest in all my previous and current autombiles. Works great. I've been looking into Castrol, wondering if that's any good. Heard good things about it.
