Default looking for ABS guru

I just purchased a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The ABS light was on when I bought it. I checked all of the wheel sensors and they seem to be clean and in good shape. the light is on from the get go when I start the vehicle. I bought an ABS code reader but it doesn't link up to the ABS module to give me any codes. I'm thinking the control module and pump. Does anyone know how to test the module?

DRBIII scanner and the code book is what you need. It reads everything out thru the OBDII data port.

First thing I would check are the wheel sensors. You said they looked good, but did you test them. You can probably find a YouTube (argh, am I allowed to say that on here!!??) video to show you how if you haven't. My experience with these critters is that you destroy them trying to remove them from the hub which you don't need to do just to test, so be careful if you do decide to remove them. Also if you need parts check rockauto.com, great prices.

Make sure your ABS tone rings are not damaged as well.

The brakes are spongee and the pedal does not vibrate when I slam on the brakes which usually happens with ABS brakes that's why I'm leaning towards a control module issue that and the fact I can't read the codes.it's a canundrum. Without codes I can't pin point the issue but I can't get the codes unless I pay the dealership which that cost would be the same price as a new module and pump....

If the ABS light is illuminated on the dash then this indicates a fault which will automatically disable the entire ABS system. You will not have any pulsation when slamming on the brakes. Do not confuse the defaulted "off" situation for a nonfunctioning module (or any other component).

As what has been said before, you need to get the codes.
