Default Locker or not?

I need to replace the rear axle of my ZJ. If all I'm basically using it for is snow and ice on paved and gravel roads, do I want a locker or not? I had a 67 Camero with posi and it was a little touchy to drive in the winter. Does something with a short wheelbase need a locker or is it detrimental to the handling? I would think it might be great for mud, but also might be a bad thing on solid ground. Clue me in, would you?

I'm pretty much in the same boat, I've got a pretty much standard zj with a lift kit and am looking to throw a locker in it. does anyone know if this will destroy the standard auto?

I think a posi would work best for you. Something like a Detroit Tru Trac. My 91 Cherokee has a posi rearend and seldomly it gets a little squirly in heavy rain etc. I'd rather have it than not have it.

a locker can be scary as chit on flat shiny snow/ice.

an LSD carrier may be better suited for your application.

x2. Also depending on if you have the dana 44a, the only options you have are an Aussie locker, or the factory LS, or open.

a locker wont be to bad but if you have a d35 forget it you will destroy axle shafts I personally would swap in a lsd 8.8 if budget was a concern

Default locker or not

I think you guys answered my question quite well. For straight line acceleration, such as drag racing, a locker is great! I don't think it is so great for what I bought it for, which is delivering morning newspapers ( usually before the plows) an a rural area, and having a little fun offroad once in a while. This past Monday morning I was pulling a U-y and slid off the road into a snow filled ditch, covering myself with loose newsprint! I simply drove it out! I love this vehicle!

By the way, I have a 4.0 with a d35 3.73 and it was only in partime 4wd. Of course I had about 500 lbs. of newspaper aboard also.
