I will try to adjust the tv cable a little to see if that stops the delay on the first and second shift also are the 42re strong transmissions or are they weak if so will another trans fit in and work fine or should i just suck it up and prepare to get another 42re. I don;t want to be left walking

That are a good tranny. Most people ignore the problems until they are cooked so they get a bad wrap.

I took the jeep to a garage where a friend adjusted the tv cable. I was hoping that it would help but still doesn't wanna shift right it seems like it does good in 1st to 2nd then when it tries to shift to 3rd i can give it alot of rpm's like 4 grand and still don't wanna shift until i let off the gas then it seems to lose its grip then around two seconds later it takes hold then it goes fine, so can it be fixed and how much is all this gonna cost me. If its gonna cost to much should i try to find a used one may be cheaper?

I was wondering will a transmission out of a v8 grand cher. work it is a 97 and mine is a 96. A friend told me no because the plugs are diff. and the bolt pattern on tranny was diff. mine is a 42re and it was the only one that will work for a 4.0L engine, is that true????

Being an ATSG/ATRA certified transmission rebuilder means Im "a know it all" when it comes to transmissions.
Im sorry that in my years of experience with transmissions I have learned something, and am actually knowledgeable in the matter.
Dont worry, Ill go "play my games" in my tranny shop, where we dont change filters on transmissions with obvious internal damage.
Again, to anyone who actually needs legitimate information on transmissions, especially chrysler transmissions, feel free to contact me and I will help you to the best of my ability.
I have a 1991 cherokee sport with an automatic transmission, and i am having some on the same problems. Like the other guy has mentioned, i also have to feather the gas to get it into the next gear. When i start out in drive it doesnt like to upshift no matter if it's from 1-2, 2-3, etc. I have done some research and have heard people say it could the speed sensor. By the way my jeep is stock. Im not your typical jeep guy with the light bars and the lift kits and the whole 9. If you can help me out let me know, because i dont want to buy parts that aren't nessasary. Noah

I found that in my case it was the shift solenoids in my 42re trans replaced them and shifts great took them out of a junkyard trans that had bellhousing broke, but no fluid loss
said it shifted good about a week before i got it so took a chance also mine didn't have a shift cable or tv cable so must be electronic on a 91 if a wire is run from tranny to carb looks like a second throttle or a choke cable but that would be the shift cable if thats out of adjustment then you'll have to adjust or replace there are many threads on here that can help with that hope this helps
