195k but it looks like someone may have changed the trans fluid but i don't know for sure i thought it might be a modulator valve or a sensor or something like that because it don't seem to slip just jerk hard when shifting any idea's would be great

also is there anyway to check to see on my own instead of taking it to a garage??

Use commas and periods more often lol. Btw, almost all Chrysler automatics are junk from the mid-80s to the new millennium. Only in the past ten years have any of them been built to last.

I dunno if i would call 195k miles junk.. thats a lot of miles for an automatic in any vehicle.

If your getting hard jerky shifts, you could try adjusting the TV cable. That can affect how strong the shifts are, i do know tho on both my Jeeps the transmissions you will feal them shifting and that a smooth shifting transmission isnt always good.

Do a search on this forum on how to adjust the throttle pressure cable, that should take care of the problem.

its hard to explain but when its moving in first, it seems like it don't wanna go to the next gear but if you let off the throttle a little it will shift into second kinda hard like a jerk all of this is done with little throttle i'm not pushing the peddle to the floor or anything like that it just seems like it don't wanna shift and when it does it snaps it into the next gear as far as the miles my cherokee country has 200k on it and even though the trans fluid looks dark it still performs fine so i don't think is the miles on the trans doing the hard shifting i just can't figure out why shifting so hard??

Yea look up on how to adjust the TV or kickdown cable. Sometimes if its not adjusted correctly it wont down shift like it should and just hold gears, or it might shift to quickly and down shift when it doesnt need too.

Our "98 ZJ did the same. 1/2 bottle of Lucas and it works fine. This Jeep has 208,000 miles and has pulled a 22" camper all over the Skyline Parkway, Blue Ridge Parkway and even the Smokey Mountains. will rebuild and beef the trans later - before pulling the camper again, but to call this trans junk is just crazy talk!

posts like this irritate me. not the question , but the obviously uneducated answers. oh its junk, and thats all I can say because I dont know anything. God, if you dont know anything about transmissions, I dont know why you would have to put your .02$ in everywhere.
The transmissions are very stout units when properly maintained. they have a couple common problems that are easily repaired should they come up. Most people put off the repairs until the transmission really is "junk" then blame their lack of maintenance on it.
anyway, if you are having to let off the throttle for it to shift than, like stated above, you most likely have a tv adjustment issue.
Do some searching on here to find procedure. If you have any issue i will copy the FSM for you on how to adjust it. That should take care of it.
Good luck!
