2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo 2 WD

Was about half way into my 5 mile trip, doing about 40 mph level road when my Jeep totally died for about 3 seconds... no steering, all gauges dropped.... then it came back to life for another 3 seconds before dying again for maybe 1 second, then back to life and I drove home. I had to stop at 2 lights and felt a jerk when coming to a stop.

I have great mechanics at home in Atlanta but my problem is I'm in small town North Dakota and need to make sure I can make it home in November.

I've been to the dealership earlier this month with what I thought was heat soak. They were unable to duplicate but did change my spark plugs. 2 days later it hit 94 degrees and that problem was actually worse than their spark plug solution. It's cooled down now up here so at least that hasn't happened again.

We have the Haynes manual and are hoping to get some suggestions here for some things we could check and repair ourselves.

What engine do you have?

 

Just went through this with my daughters 00 XJ.
No codes just random shutdown and restart.

Replaced the Crank Position Sensor and it hasn't died since.

I bought it new. Has 162k miles on it and I still like it!

 

It does sound like a crank sensor or cam sensor issue. Do them both.

Save yourself some heartaches and use Mopar sensors. JMHO.

My 98 GC was doing the same. I put my little code reader on it and got back "rear output shaft sensor". It's at the rear of the transmission.
Changed it out and no problem since. A $25 easy fix.

So, looks like these sensors are many times the problem. Makes sense that they go bad after time.

 

What's everyone's opinion of Dorman parts?

 

Made in China. Mopar is the first choice, NAPA is the second choice. Spending more money up front will save you money and headaches in the long run.

Some NAPA parts are made in Mexico or Brazil. Better than China, but not much. Just saying.
