Welcome to CF. Check the u-joints in the drive shaft for excessive play.

h drive shaft has a little play in it. Could the slip yoke have something to do with it?

You need to observe where the play is coming from. Any play in the u-joints is too much. Also look for play where the rear yoke attaches to the rear axle for any play, in/out, up/down movement. That would indicate pinion bearing wear/damage.

Had the same problem with my ZJ. Turns out I had a busted u-joint cap on the left front wheel.

Turns out it was the transfer case the chain stretched out and was jumping the gear

OUCH! I've heard of them snapping and busting the case! Glad you got to yours in time.
