Hi, i need a new alternator for my car. Is TYC (83$) or ACDELCO (110$) from Rockauto ok alternators?

I don't know who TYC is, but I've not had trouble with ACD parts.

However, for alternators & starters, my best advice is to find yourself a local shop that does rewinds - dealing directly with the guys that do the work & testing usually means getting better work done.

If you can't find a local shop, you can use mine - www.kelleyswip.com/sjg.html. You would deal with Rod directly, but he's a good guy.

Using the Advance Auto Parts website will get you 20% off on parts now. Best part about it is no shipping, you drive to the local store and pick it up! The Driveworks is OK quality, same as a local rebuild. Some new, some refurbed parts. Remy is the same as the AC Delco.

YMMV

Don't you just hate guys that don't read the headers on a post? I saw that you were from Norway first thing! I don't know what you've got in your jeep, but Denso was just about standard on later models.

Another thing is most overseas models have different emission systems. We've had questions about diesel jeeps which are not sold in the US. I just relied on my knowledge of big-rig and construction diesels. IMO, Mercedes is the only maker that does diesel properly.

Gimme a break - I don't always catch that.

Benz does good Diesels, but that's because Rudolf Diesel worked for them. Cummins for trucks; Nissan, Toyota, and Isuzu have all done excellent Diesels for pax cars (Perkins does good Diesels for light applications as well, I've worked on plenty in forklifts and other equipment.)

Well, 5-90, I've never seen a Merc blowing black smoke! There are a lot of good diesels out there, all I was saying is Merc runs the cleanest I've seen.

Didn't mean to twist your tail.

All depends on the efficiency of the fuel metering. You're more likely to see thick black smoke from a heavy truck Diesel than a pax Diesel tho - it's jut the nature of operation and requirements of the engine.

By the way, TYC is a Taiwanese company, not to say they are no good. After all, Taiwan builds some of the biggest container ships in the world.
