Default Inova 3160 VS Actron CP9580

I was looking at the Actron CP9580 OBD2 and ABS code scanner, but their tech support says it will not read ABS codes on my 96 ZJ; it goes back to 97, but not 96.

The Innova 3160 says it does Chrysler/Jeep ABS on 96 and up, but calling their tech support they say theirs only reads ABS on 99 and up. The tech guy said it all depends on the folks who make the ABS and whether they are willing to sell or share the data to make a reader work.

Is there any affordable code scanner that can read ABS codes on a 96 ZJ? Or, does anyone know what the resistance should be if I start checking sensors at the junction under the back seat?

Look on ebay for an old Snap-On scanner. You can find them for around a hundred bucks with all of the latest updates and needed plugs. You can actually do diagnostics with it instead of only being able to read codes.

I took a look at some of these on eBay; seems kind of complicated with different cartridges and personality keys (what the heck is a personality key for?) I'll keep an eye out, though. Any place to learn how the snap on scanner is used and what a guy would need for a 96 ZJ?

BTW, in my working days I did engineering for Mac Tools in Ohio before moving to Arkansas to work for a company that makes Craftsman tools. Several of my friends ended up at Snap on later; good tools but pricey.
