how can you tell which t-case you have?

Default how can you tell which t-case you have?

i want to get a 7" lift on my 94 v8 5.2 jeep zj how can i tell which kind of t-case i have? So i can see if i can get a SYE or not. So any tips would be great and whats the difference between the two.

If you have 2hi,4hi,N,4lo you have an NP231. If you have 4hi,N and 4lo you have an NP249. If you have 2h, 4hi, 4full time, N, and4lo you ave an NP242. You can always look at the tag on the transfercase.

look on the back of the transfer case, there will be a round red and silver tag.
you may have to clean it off with a wire brush because sometimes crap builds up and you cant read it.

yea check the tag on the rear left of the transfer case. It should be silver with red

I dont have either one of those, I have 4all time, N, and 4lo. Thats it on there for mine.

you have the 249.
90% of all v8 grands came with the full time cases.

i think the 249 came in the zj and the 247 were in the wj. or at least the later wj's.

I've seen some aftermarket CV/SYE for the front for Jeeps with 249. Although I don't know much about the setup. Just throwing it out there.

I got under my jeep and it said its a 249, but i hear alot of people talk about cv front drive shafts in them mine has the double cardian (I think I spelled that right.). So what kind of kit would i need to make the 7" lift work since i have the 249 double cardian front drive shaft. Also if I have to swap t-cases out then whats different or so good about the np231?

249 had the infamous viscous coupler, which will wear out after around 150000 miles or so. that causes the front wheels to bind in turns, and weird wear on the front tires. np231 has much more aftermarket support than the 249, probably because it came in most YJ and TJ wranglers

Could i get any 231 out of a zj and would it bolt on to transmission and drive shaft without haveing to buy a kit to make it fit?

A "hack and tap" (aka HnT) should work with any tcase...
