I've replaced mine a year ago, pretty simple once you remove the grill and washer bottle. I got mine from www.rockauto.com. Just be carefull not to pinch it between the core support.

Remove the grill and use a screw driver to move the release. The grill will come out pretty easily with only three screws holding it in at the top.

This problem presented itself to a Dodge Ram owner. In his case he had to work a wrench in to remove the hood latch. As a result of that thread I came up with a secondary emergency release which works good.
I will have to look at the Jeep to see if I can add the secondary release. If I come up with something good I will post.
I had the cable break once but it was at the handle and I used pliers to release the hood. I remember snaking the new cable back into position but I do not recall removing anything to do the install. It was a long time ago and I could be wrong. Snake a thin wire thru the firewall grommet. Attach new cable and tape with masking tape. Add a little lubrication and pull it thru the grommet.

On my wife's Dodge Caravan, I had to cut a hole in the hood and drill out the bolts holding the latch shackle. I tried to cut the shackle with a sawzall, but it's hardened steel.

On my '97 ZJ, there were screws that went horizontally through the grille, and also screws that went down vertically through the top of the grille, into the core support once the hood was opened. Of course the grille is plastic if you want to break it & replace it.
My 93 ZJ just has 3 screws holding my grill in, well now 2 since one broke. But I'm having this problem with the hood on my explorer, hood latch cable is way too loose and won't open. I think I can get it with long needle nose pliers though. If anyone has had this hood problem with an explorer and knows a simple way that would help too lol.
Mine was broke when I bought my ZJ. I replaced it with one of ours. The little rubber gromet that goes into the firewall was kind of a pain. If you use a little soap and water on it, it should help to position it.
