Default Which head is best?

I may be going to replace the head on my 2001 GC 4.0 ans know there's a better head that's not prone to cracking but not sure which one it is? I think it's a head off an older GC like 1999 ????? Any details would be greatly appreciated!

The best place to buy from, the year, part number, etc please.

Also any other helpful tips.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK Riz, there are 2 options. Yours is the 0331 head.

First option is a 0331 "TUPY" head. These are a recast factory head made in Brazil using more nickel in the metal pour. They were fazed into the 2001-2002 model run. They can be identified by the "TUPY" molded or stamped into the head near the 0331 identifier between the #3 and #4 cylinders in the valve spring area. These were Chrysler's fix.

Option 2 is an aftermarket heavy duty casting. I bought a "Clearwater" head from Odessa Cylinder Head for $455 complete with valves and free shipping BOTH ways (core return). They are guaranteed not to crack for 60 months unless overheated. They weight 7 lbs more than the original head. These are item number CHR238ZN. There is a $100 core charge if it's not returned in 30 days, but they are lenient about that. Mine has been running since April 2015 and I am totally happy with it. Google "Clearwater cylinder heads" or call them at 800-572-1963. I got mine in 3 days because they have a warehouse here in NY.

BTW, Chrysler never admitted there was a problem with the 0331 head, YET they fixed it! You figure THAT out. Also, even though the 4.0 wasn't available after 2004, they continued to produce them until 2007 for replacements.

Default 2000 jeep cherokee

Hello,
I just started changing out my head cylinder on my 2000 jeep cherokee, i was wondering and can anyone please tell me is there a sequence to taking off the cylinder head bolts,,,, i attempted to take the first large bolt on front but havent taken anything off first. It looked like it would strip it so i stopped and started taking parts off

I wouldn't use anything but a 6-point socket or wrench or you might round the flats on the bolts. There isn't necessarily any sequence to them, just make sure the socket fits snugly. I would recommend new bolts anyhow and clean out the threads in the block before putting them in. There IS a sequence for torquing the head when putting it on.

Absolutely! A 12-point just grabs the tips of the flats and a 6-point grabs the entire flat sides of the hex. For even MORE power, sometimes manufacturers use a 12-point BOLT HEAD. I think most jeeps have those on the front hub bearings.

Hey, I told you which one I recommended! Do whatever you want. It's your jeep!

OOPS! That IS the one! My bad!

I just didn't know what marking to look for or anything like that.

When I said I do not want to deal with this gain I meant the Jeep itself, not asking the question. I just don't want to deal with having to pay out more down the line, I'd rather buy the right thing now and be done with it.

Thanks for all your help so far, Dave1123. I swear you're the only guy on here anymore.

The best thing for you to do is call them toll-free with the part number I gave you. I wasn't sure from their website which one to order, but that one phone call convinced me they know what they are doing. Even though there is a lot more metal in the head, it uses all stock parts. No longer pushrods or special rockers.

The only thing I'm going to warn you about is that head is drilled and tapped for 2 temp sensors. The one in the thermo housing and one near the rear by the number 5&6 cylinders above the intake manifold. They come with a pipe plug in the rear hole, but mine wasn't tight and was painted over. Of course I didn't check for it and it started leaking after a couple of days. I TOTALLY Freaked Out!! How the F is coolant bubbling up between the injectors???

Because of previous commitments, I was going to cut the 30-day return close, so I called them about it. They said not to worry. They don't even send a bill until well after that time. Nice people.

The main reason I'm always here is I'm retired and bored! AND I like to help people.

BTW, I just did the changeover from Teves to Akebono brakes. I got totally fed up with constantly working on my brakes and redid all 4 wheels at once. NO MORE SQUEAKS!!! so far.

I was just about to order then I input my Jeep year and specs and it says it IS NOT compatible for my 2001 Grand Cherokee???? I just want to make sure 100% before I order it BUT I do want to order it today so I can get it next week.

This is the head I was looking at originally..... not sure why my previous post shows a link to an Amazon site now??? Why does it switch my link to an Amazon ad for a head that's 520 bucks where the EBAY link I am looking at is for $455 ????

I just want to order the right one.

Don't screw around with Amazon or Ebay!! Call Odessa direct at 800-572-1963 and tell them you want to purchase a CHR283ZN cylinder head. That's listed as a 6 CYL, 4.0, 99-07, OHV, 0331 NEW CASTING. It looks to me like they're getting enough business now to use second party sellers so they don't have to maintain a website anymore. Their price last April was $455 complete. Shipping included. 2 ways. It looks like Amazon is trying to rape your wallet! Ebay probably stopped selling them because they weren't making any money on them.

The funny part about this whole thing is it was sent to me via Fedex and the return label was USPS listed as "scrap metal."

Just like I thought. If they're out of stock, the most be selling a lot of them. There was an "Alabama" head at one time, but they seem to be not selling them anymore. Probably because they couldn't keep up with demand.

As I mentioned, check for that extra temp sensor plug. Make sure it's tight. The head is guaranteed not to crack for 60 months unless overheated. There is a melt tag on it for that purpose. Tag melts at 260*F

Update; Alabama Cylinder Head IS out of business.
