Did you just reply to your own question like it was someone else that asked it? This is a total shot in the dark, but I suspect your transfer case hit something and broke. It should buff out, then will just need the fluid topped off, you probably lost a little. Also, this is the XJ section. Since you know what a ZJ is, I won't link the correct section.

Either you hit something really hard or you ran it dry and it just gave way. To me it looks like you ran it dry since everything looks dry.

Get a vehicle, drive it, never look under it, check fluids or anything. Act all surprised when this stuff happens................

Yup, it looks like it ran dry and the front shaft output bearing seized. No fluid on the frame or side of the case. Chain looks okay, LOL!
