ok i am looking at a grand cherokee limited around 99 to a 02 with the v8
after owning 2 xj's and dealing with an 0331 issue i want to go to a more comfortable bigger dd. so what im really asking is what are the known issues with these years. also if they were still using the dana 35/30 or 8.25 solid axles. the transmissions and the transfer case in them. just general information or input on them. also are the older ones better then the newer?

I have two 02's. one is a special edition with the 4.0 in it. The other is a limited with the 4.7 high output. Both are great, they give me fits every so often (what car doesn't)?
The downsides I have had
The window regulators tend to be weak, the cable breaks free and the window usually is stuck in the open position. About a $99 fix for a complete new setup motor and regulator.
The "blend door" issue, which happens on dual zone GC. And leaking heater cores
The 4.0 is great motor, tends to tick a lot though
The 4.7 is a good motor, I have heard lots of complaints but usually due to poor maintenance that causes major problems.
The heated leather seats (limited's and overland's) have recalls on some years and the years without recalls seem to be broken more often than not.
The years you mention had three different transfer cases to choose from. You can find a good write here www.wjjeeps.com/cases.htm

I've read a lot of not so good things about sluge build up in the 4.7L V8. Might be because of too long between oil changes... not sure. I have the 4.0L in my ZJ and it's 16 years old and still run's good.

Consider yourself lucky, you got one assembled properly. This engine was designed as a DD and not for off-road abuse. It was an attempt to make a high mpg engine and has to be "buzzed" to get any torque. The 4.0 makes good low end torque but lacks mid-range power.
It is also my understanding the D35 and D30 are still used in the WJ. The V8s may have the D44 rear.

Does anyone know the part number for the for the pre-96 fibreglass liftgate, trim push clips (10 of them I think?) They seem to be some custom size with a slot style connection between clip head and base
