Front Driveshaft Humm in 2wd
My grandpa has a wj or zj. His front driveshaft makes a wooshing noise even when in 2wd. Currently to quiet it down, he pulls it out during the summer when he knows he won't need 4wd, then puts it back in for winter.
any ideas?

U-joints would be a good place to start, but sounds more like could be front Pinion bearings. With the drive shaft installed, grab it near the front axle check to see if there is movement (up, down side to side in and out) if you get more than a 1/8th of a inch movement I'd say that is probably the problem...

Hey Guys,
Don't know if you have gotten this solved yet or what, but here is the breakdown.
It sounds like you need to replace or repair the CV on the front drive shaft. The WJ with either the 249 or 247 transfer case has a CV style boot on one end and a double cardin u joint on the other. If your grandpa wants to upgrade, Tom Woods sells a conversion drive line that has UJOINT on both ends. You can also have your local drive line shop rebuild the CVs.
Also, you DONT want to drive it with out the front drive shaft, because you will BURN OUT your viscous coupler (VC) which is a pricey and hard to reach part in your tcase that requires front drive line to operate correctly.
