So I got everything I needed on Wednesday so last night after work I did the full install. I need to clean up the wires a bit to make it look prettier and I am still deciding if I want to use the relay to cut power to the fan when the ignition is off or let the fan run on after shut off. It only ran for 45 seconds to a minute after shutdown. This fan works good, really good. Before if I was at a stop and was running the AC when it was hot out it would creep past the 210 mark. Now it stays right at 195 all the time. We shall see how this holds up on a hot day since many are coming this way. I could not get it warm enough for the high to kick on but depending on how good the low speed does it may never kick in to high or at least not very often. I'll take some pics after work today and post them up if anyone is interested.

Reminds me of a problem my friend had with an older Mercedes sedan. They had a fan that ran any time the coolant was above temp, even if the ignition was off. Bill came out one morning to go to work and his battery was dead. When it was fixed, he found out the relay stuck and the fan ran all night. In later years, Mercedes added a timer to shut the fan off 10 minutes after the ignition was turned off, whether the coolant was above temp or not. Just an added complication to an already complicated circuit. Leave it to the Germans.

Looks really nice. Maybe you could add an adjustable timing relay to control the fan after shutting down.

That's a good idea, I'll look in to that as well. I'm running it with the relay for now and seeing how it does over the next week or so. I am thinking I may need a higher output alternator after I load tested it with the headlights, AC, Stereo and fan running the volts dropped to the low 12's.

Update: So I notice now after I removed stock clutch fan & shroud that it seems to run cooler and until it gets warmer outside (say mid day) the Taurus fan never kicks on. In the mornings and at night my temps stay below 195 and my fan does not kick on at all even when stopped at a long light after driving on the highway. I do still see the temp needle move as the thermostat opens each cycle. I do some highway and some around town every time I drive since I live outside of town and have a good 10 minute drive anytime I want to do anything lol

I've heard it said that a direct coupled fan and water pump takes about 35 hp off the engine. IDK if that's true, but I'm told the hp increase on the later 4.0s are directly related to going to an electric fan. What is it, 5 hp?

I wonder how much an alternator uses. I know 2 guys with super hot rods who use electric water pumps and say they can tell the difference in power output.

Once upon a time, I did some research on the difference between SAE hp and DIN hp. The SAE is engine power output without accessories, while DIN is with them.

 

Yes the mechanical power can be saved with electrical fan and water pump, but you will need more electrical power, so the generator will use the most saved energy, unless the water pump is also switched down if the coolant is not warm enough, but in this case it's hard to measure the temperature.

 

Yeah, running more electrical equipment requires larger alternators. Most of my experience is with GM products, and when they started putting rear window defrosters in their cars, they had to increase the alternator output from 40 amps to 70 amps.

 

What serpentine belt did you use?

 

stock belt, I did not change any pulleys just removed the fan/clutch assembly then installed new shorter bolts with washers to hold the pulley on the water pump.

Hallo guys,can you my friend tell us how you connect this fan with the electrical parts fuses relays and the thermo switch,I had a grand Cherokee overland that used hydraulic cooling fan I want to convert it electric fan and install also clutch fan.

Why the need for the extra relay fed from the battery out to the +12V on the volvo relay switched from ign? Can an ign source not switch the volvo relay directly?
