Find out how to remove the dash panel and find the screws holding the VIC in, pull it from the dash, and disconnect the harness going to it. I'm just not sure if there's a sensor that'll keep the chime from going off (it's L O U D) when there's some kind of fault, such as a door being open, or if a coolant sensor is bad, even if the screen is disconnected. Mine in my 1994 ZJ was annoying as well, it beeped at me and gave me all sorts of false warnings.
The 1993-1995 ZJ's have a different dash disassembly than the 1996-1998 ZJ's, and I had a 1994 ZJ, so I only know how to disassemble the dash of the 1993-1995 ZJ's.
This is also a great time to replace the factory radio if you still have it in place (:

Mine has finally gone from being a PITA to being totally whacked out as of last week. Clock keeps resetting...except when it doesn't...and every warning light is lit up.
Strange thing is..the warning beep seems to have died also. Maybe it overloads and does nothing since EVERY red warning light comes on on the VIC....
I'll have to go search the JY for some cubby holes but so far I've only see them with a VIC...must be all the foofy Silicon Valley buyers who only bought optioned out Grands...
..almost never see XJs except for run into the ground examples that kids are thrashing on, or the pristine ones that some 60 year old guy bought new and nearly perfect--oil changed every 2,995-2,999 miles, handwashed every Sunday, and they'll never sell them because it's their extra car for picking up landscaping supplies once a year.
Might be time to finally ground the stupid alarm as well...or pull the door panel off and see if I can clean things up enough to get the driver key to turn the interior lights on.... Tailgate used to work until a huge 2 day rainstorm....so now the procedure is don't trigger it in the first place... (power lock doors with engine on and all doors closed, then MANUALLY lock the drivers door) or key the passenger door first after parking...PITA.

The only options were the graphic system (standard on most 1996-1998 models), or the EVIC with the digital readout (standard on most 1993-1995 models, and optional on some 1996-1998 models, standard on higher trim levels of the 1996-1998 models). No "cubby hole" was available, though you could make one to fit.

Old fart with a wrench
Here's something. My wife's 97 Dodge Caravan had a cubby-hole in the dash that was just big enough for a boutique box of Kleenex tissues, which is exactly what she used it for. Marketing!
