Can I remove front driveshaft for extended driving?
I have a 99 GC 4.7 with Quarda Track ll and do a lot of highway driving. There is a noticeable whine when under load and less when off the gas going down a grade. My mechanic said the front diff may need to be rebuilt at some time in the future but is fine now. I was thinking that removing the front driveshaft would possibly eliminate the whine and help with gas mileage. I recall reading something here, if I recall correctly, that one should not remove the front driveshaft because it is not good for the transfer case.
Any thoughts on this idea?

Not with Quadratrac! With Selectrac you can, but it'll ruin the clutch in the Quadratrac t/case. You have the NV 247 t/case which is better in that respect than the older NV 249, but it will still roll in park slowly. And forget about better fuel mileage. You will still be turning those front axle gears and creating drag because the wheels are driving them. You can try it to see if the whine goes away, but I wouldn't leave it out.
