SO I have a 96 limited 5.2 and was driving home and all the sudden just rooling smoke from under the hood. Ends up my compressor locked up and my clutch is smoking. So my biggist question is how hard is it to swap out the compressor and dryer and is there a good place to get one pretty inexpensive? Auto part stores want 2 to 3 hundred. Thanks
Hmmm I don't really think you'll find an ac compressor for less than 200 unless if you try getting one from a junk yard, if you're trying to save money and you think you can go without an ac you can try getting a bypass pulley which just replaces your compressor or you can buy a shorter serpentine belt which will not include the compressor, my ac compressor was going out so I went ahead and purchased a shorter belt

You will do the job twice if you use a junkyard compressor. Shop around for the best price, but it will be close to 200 bucks just for the compressor. Then you will want to replace the liquid line because the oriface tube will be clogged with junk from the compressor, that is about 40 dollars. The reciever/dryer should be replaced, thats 30 bucks. You might as well replace the hose assembly since you'll have the whole system apart, another 60 dollars. The you need a vacuum pump to rid the system of air and moisture after you replace all of the hoses and compressor, and then you'll need refriderant and a gauge set to charge the system. You can find all of the needed parts at www.rockauto.com . If you never messed with A/C, or know how the system works, I suggest taking it to a shop.

Doesn't the pulley spin free if you unplug the clutch? Or is that locked up too? I've bought a kit that replaces the compressor with a pulley and bracket, but they are all cheap and don't last.
