You should first take it to an AC repair shop where they can find the leak for you for a small fee, then you can be sure and fix it correctly the first time.
If it's the evaporator coil the dash has to be removed, at least partially.
I'll send you the repair info in a Private Message.

Could be a leaking evaporator coil, or maybe a rock chip in the condenser, or a bad o-ring. Take it to an AC shop and have them find the leak to be sure you replace what's actually leaking.
If you need the repair info for your '01 XJ I'm sending you a PM.

Any suggestions on parts and what to stay away from?

Welcome to CF. I'll send you a Private Message with repair info.
As stated earlier, I use Chrysler/Jeep parts unless I can't help it, as you get a correct part/fit with a good warranty. I'd replace the heater core, and receiver dryer while you're in there. Cheap insurance.

New to cf, love the site so far, lots of great info. Ice got a 94 Cherokee and I'm assuming my evaporator housing is cracked because I've hit condensation leaking on the floor. Haynes manual says it's an in-depth job that requires removal of dash. I've seen a few posts about this but not regarding an older one like mine. Also, I can smell a slight amount of coolant in the cab, perhaps heater core is leaking a.bit too?

Ol"Blue:

Sounds like your getting killed with requests for this, but can I get the instructions for replacing the evaporator on a 96 XJ?

Thank you.

Default Evaporator - My Turn

It has been a great summer here in the NW but it would appear it is my turn to replace the evap. I have the parts and am hoping to knock it out weekend. The repair info would be great if anyone has it. 2001 XJ

Hello Ol"Blue,
My son has a 98 XJ and we are having a lot of fun fixing it up. Just had a break line burst, so we are working on that now.

The AC doesn't blow cold, so we are going to work on that next. I have it today at an AC shop to recharge and dye to help find any leak then we will go from there. I am suspecting the evap, but we shall see.

thanks for your great support on this thread. I love this site.

I'm having the same issue with my daughter's 2000 XJ Sport. Dumped tons of freon and various sealant items in it just to get her through the summer. It appears to be the evaporator itself. I have as yet been unable to find a decent write up or service procedure. Any info you can share will be most appreciated. It's rained a lot here in Georgia this year so running around with her windows down is not an option. She just sweats from place to place.
