Question EDIT 5/6/12: Busted sway bar link...

Hey all, I tried to edit the subject title on the main forum page but it won't let me. I do know that it isn't the pitman arm that broke, that it was in fact the sway bar link.

Few days ago I managed to bust the of the sway bar link where it connects to the sway bar on the right front passenger side of my heep, which happens to be a '96 ZJ, I6, auto, 4 wheel drive.( The sway bar looks to be in good shape, no breaks or bends in it where the sway bar link broke.)

Been checking prices to see what's out and about and I've found quite the price spread, from a $16 Autozone part, up to a $24 part form Rockauto, up to to about $45 at Advanced for a Moog part. Opinions as to where I should go to find one? I don't do off-road much or hard but I do like to get squirrelly from time to time. Also, is it recommended to replace both sway bar links at the same time? Probably should just to be on the safe side, huh...?
And one last thing...I'm a DIY kinda guy as much as possible,,,would this fall in that category or no?
Ideas, opinions, donations(kidding!) always welcome!!
Thanks guys

The pitman arm does not connect to the sway bar.

Sounds like you probably broke a sway bar link. I would go ahead and replace the other one too. For most DIY'ers it should be an pretty easy job. .

Bustedback-Awesome shot with the labels. Thank you! I knew it was the sway bar link...that dope on the trail obviously had no clew what he was talking about

jnicewan-yeah, that's exactly what I broke.

I was on a trail, it snapped, I happened to see a jeeper in an XJ and asked him what it was. He looked at it and instantly said it was an upper ball joint?! I knew it was the sway bar link, said as much but because I was a driving a ZJ, I apparently didn't know what I was talking about. Some jeep guys seriously **** me off when they look down their nose at you. Whatever, I saw him pulled over later coming out of trail by the fuzz so #$%^ him.
I'm on a tight budget so what all would guys recommend for replacements?

Thanks for the all the help and info guys, I really appreciate it.
SickZJ-yeah, after scoping out bustedback's color-coded picture, no chance I'da gotten more than an inch or 2 before some sort of catastrophic failure. As it was I ended up limping her about a mile and half on the trail and to the first asphalt I could find that AAA would go to. I never went over 12 mph...even though the XJ guy I had talked to earlier told me I can still drive it just don't go over 20-25 mph. Um, yeeeaaahhh, I don't think so, so I didn't.

So anyway, thanks again for the 411!

I always use Rauto as my first go-to for price comparisons. I did see the parts you mentioned. Together, 2 links run just about $36. So I go to plug in the shipping info....which, came as a shock to me, was double the price of the parts because according to their info, they're coming from Great Britain!! Are you kidding me?!?! Looks like I might be stuck with those damn rebuild sway bar links from Autozone. It's either that or wait for Advanced to order the second Moog link, just my luck they only have one in stock....at $40 freakin a pop!

My heep ain't movin' an inch until I replace those links and dammit, I'm still in the hospital recovering from my second spinal surgery, this is the last damn thing I need to deal with. I can't even put my socks on, how in the hell am I going replace those links

Ok, pity party over, time for my next morphine injection and valium pills...so, I guess that'll be the lemonade I make from these latest lemons that I've received. At least I get about 20-30 mins of relief every 3 hours so I guess that's kinda good, at least.

Any more input or suggestions would be great guys as this is my DD.
Thanks

Well, I just a had a great conversation with a tech over at Rauto and found what I needed. I'm ordering a good pair of MOOG's for $25.79 each with shipping at $9.49 for a grand total of $ 61.07. In my opinion, (not being a complete jeep aficionado [YET]) that sounded like a pretty good deal to me....especially considering those $26 Moogs were the EXACT same part at Advanced who wanted $40 a piece(even with my discount, never would've come close to that $26.....now ain't that just a bunch of cow pies!!
Anyway, hopefully they'll be here sometime this week...I'd really like to get some laundry done....been finding lots of small, furry, dead, critters outside by my windows. M'eh, population and disease control right?
