Yeah that's why I mentioned the sale, they're too expensive. I run Mobil 1 High Mileage. I poured some STP in it once but didn't like how crazy thick the stuff was so I don't use it anymore. Maybe it dissipates once it gets in there, I hope so, but I don't use it or any other additive like Lucas or anything.

Thats good stuff to know. I bought a Mobil-1 MIL-301 filter because it was available, the PureOne was out of stock and I didnt want to wait.

Thanks guys.

The STP is thick for a reason, I'd like to send a sample off to be VOAed so I can find out what is actually in it but from what i've read. STP is a 60% 50 weight base oil with 30% detergents and 10% anti-wear additives.

From my personal experience, it makes a huge difference. I added STP about 1000 miles before my last oil change and within 5 minutes of adding it my lifters and valve train went from being extremely noisy to almost silent. I added it when I changed the oil also. The lifters and valve train are still almost silent. ....the timing chain and fuel injectors are a different story. You open the hood and hear what sounds like a loose bicycle change, and the "tick, tick, tick" from my injectors.

That's probably part of why I don't use it, because I don't feel the need. My 4.0 is smooth as a sewing machine even at 175K. If you ever get that VOA done, be sure to post up because I'm definitely curious. Just today without even specifically searching forums for the topic I've read some who sear by STP and others swear against it.

The main reason I use STP is its one of the few additives on the market that has a high ZDDP content. Most additives don't have any ZDDP. The reason I wanted extra ZDDP in my oil is because over the past decade or so the amount of ZDDP in motor oil has been regulated down from what it used to be. that is no bueno for engines with flat tappet cams such as the AMC 242, which explains why so many XJs have unusually noisy valve trains.

You can just buy ZDDP additive in little bottles, Also most Diesel oils have more ZDDP, along with motorcycle too, and oils branded as "race oil" has the most. I just buy ZDDP additive from local parts store

That's why I run Mobil1 High Mileage, it has the high zinc content that we need.

Thats very true, but most if not all of the newer oils approved for use on the road have been required to reduce their ZDDP content because it can "damage emissions equipment".

That ZDDP additive is also over twice the price of the STP additive, and you have to order it and have it shipped. STP is like $2.99 a bottle and you can buy it anywhere, wal-mart, advanced, autozone, pep boys.

High Mileage Oils tend to be a crock and not worth the extra money you pay for them. Given Mobile 1 oils are the best commonly available on the market. There are other manufacturers who make better oils for racing but again they're a special order product.

Just a point of interest. I grew up near the Fram factory in Cranston, RI so I know how they are made! IMO don't use one.

No way Dave

I have read too many threads ordering me not to use them, so I went with a Mobile1 M1-301 filter. The size difference is impressive. Had to add a whole other quart to the oil change today.

Lol, yeah the bigger filters will do that. I usually do the 6 quart norm plus a bottle of STP additive and the level comes out just right.

Hey GI. BTW I'm 66 years young. Been there, done that. However, I'm new to jeepin'. Done some off road work, but not a lot. To me, mods that just look are a waste of money, but those that improve handling and traction make a lot more sense. The best thing I would love to do is Baja racing! Bullet-proof reliability is where it's at.

What ever happened to Moly-D? I thought this super slick additive was the was to go. It plates everything and doesn't gum up. Probably the EPA says it's a no-no.

Dave

While I am not as experienced in life as you are (i'm 37). I agree with you that mods done just for looks are a waste. I went with a bigger oil filter for the increase in filter media area. I also put in a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. Oddly enough, I use it because of the Baja team i used to be a part of in the early 90s. I used to be second wheel on a Class 5 unlimited for 5 years in the SCORE and Fuddpucker series of event in SoCal and Mexico. Lucas was one of the team's sponsors and we used it in everything. We were able to make our engine and transmission parts last multiple seasons where as other teams were not so fortunate. Was it because of the Lucas products, IDK, but I was sold, still am.

I am a senior enlisted Soldier in the Army and due to my responsibilities to my unit and my Soldiers, it is imperitive that my daily driver starts and runs (reliably) every time.

I remember that stuff, and I know there are a few products that use the MOLY D as a base for their additive, I can post some up but a quick google search will give results.
