Default Bigger Oil Filter

I own a 01 GC with the 4.0l. I am about to change the oil and have seen other threads about jeep owners who have installed a larger oil filter for greater capacity. Problem is, I dont know which filter to use as all the parts sources are directing me to the short filters such as the FRAM XT16.

My second wife is a '57 Chevy (see my pics). The Small Block engine in her is easy to find different parts for. Jeeps are not that easy.

Any suggestions?

Whatever you do, dont put a Fram product anywhere near your vehicle.

Only one I could source was this: 5.17" height
http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...15R_0294486101

says "not for street use" YMMV.

Good old reg filter is: 3.79" height

They are both Wix filters btw.

I have no intention of using a FRAM filter. I have read that a lot of owners are displeased with that brand. I am sure there are those that swear by this brand, but i won't be using it, just my choice.

Lightbulb Bigger oil filter found!!!!

OK, using the info that Turbo XJ directed me to on the NAPA website, i did some searching and found that the mid to late 80's Ford 302s filter is the same as the Jeep's filter only bigger.

Here is a comparison as copied from the NAPA site

Jeep Filter: FIL-1085 NAPA Gold
Flow Rate : 9 - 11 gpm
Gasket I.D. (Inches) : 2.462"
Gasket I.D. (mm) : 62.54 mm
Media Type : Cellulose
Oil Filter Gasket O.D. (Inches) : 2.834"
Oil Filter Gasket O.D. (mm) : 71.98 mm
Oil Filter Height (Inches) : 3.79"
Oil Filter Height (mm) : 96.27 mm
Oil Filter O.D. (Inches) : 3.66"
Oil Filter O.D. (mm) : 92.96 mm
Oil Filter Style : Spin-On Lube Filter
Oil Filter Thread Size (inches) : 3/4 - 16

Ford 1988 F-150 w/302: FIL-1515 NAPA Gold (same as Mustang also)
Flow Rate : 7 - 9 gpm
Gasket I.D. (Inches) : 2.462"
Gasket I.D. (mm) : 62.54 mm
Media Type : Cellulose
Oil Filter Gasket O.D. (Inches) : 2.834"
Oil Filter Gasket O.D. (mm) : 71.98 mm
Oil Filter Height (Inches) : 5.178"
Oil Filter Height (mm) : 131.52 mm
Oil Filter O.D. (Inches) : 3.66"
Oil Filter O.D. (mm) : 92.96 mm
Oil Filter Style : Spin-On Lube Filter
Oil Filter Thread Size (inches) : 3/4 - 16

There is a slight variance in the flow rates, but otherwise they are the exact same.

Cool.

I went with a larger filter one time and I'm pretty sure it was one from a 5.0 mustang that fit properly, but I switched back to the stock filter. It caused a weird fluctuation in my oil pressure and after a couple thousand miles and a couple months it never settled out. I use fully synthetic and usually run it around 7-8000 miles, so I just do a filter change halfway with a stock size filter. I know others have used a larger filter with no problems, but I'm happy to continue running a stock filter (with no problems and keeping my peace of mind).

You are correct GI, the Motorcraft filter you are talking about had a boat load of applications in years past it is the Motorcraft FL-1A, the shorter version of the same filter fits the O.E. 4.0L in the Jeeps along with others, it is the Motorcraft FL-300. There should be plenty of room to run either one if your filter is 90* off the block.

Along with a little bit more oil capacity, you are also gaining filter media. Motorcraft filters are high quality too, I would'nt flinch about using either one. I believe Motorcraft filters are basically Purolator PureOne filters which is a good thing.

Another filter which is right between the two mentioned above in length is the Purolator PureOne PL30001. It is 4.13" long

Thanks

I read on one thread that a fellow Jeepster had the filter touch the POS cable on his starter due to the length of the filter when he installed it. I was looking at the Mobil 1 filter for an '88 F-150 with the 302. The filter is 90 deg to the block. I think I will install the Pureone filter. I am a get it right once kinda guy, especially with my cars.

Keep this in mind also. The 4.0L oil filter is mounted above the pump. It might need a drain-back check valve in it. The filter will flow way more than your engine will use, so why mess with a good thing? If you're concerned about contamination, change it between oil changes. IMO it's not nessesary. The stock filter does the job! Just for curiosity, take apart an old filter. If you find more than a few carbon flakes, your engine is toast!

Been using the good ol' FL-1A for 3 or 4 oil changes. Nothing good or bad to report...it's just an oil filter. I just use those because they're cheap at WalMart.

Here's something everyone who changes their own oil should read:
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oil...reference.html

What it boils down to is this: Purolator and Champion Labs make THE best oil filters on the market. Notably the filters I have listed.

The only filters I will use on my vehicles are these(all of the larger filter size for an AMC 242):

Purolator PureONE P/n: PL30001

Mobil 1 EP P/n: M1-301

K&N P/N: HP-3001

Bosch Distance Plus: P/N D3500

The K&N filter is really just Mobil1 filter guts in a different casing.

All 4 filters use a synthetic filter media which not only filters better but also more efficiently.

I wouldn't use a fram filter on my vehicles if you paid me, they really are that bad.

Hopefully this info will educate some people.

I've always wondered about the K&N so this is good to know. I don't buy them because I just stick with Purolator or Mobil1, but now I'll know if I see one on sale.

Its not worth the money, they are really overpriced.

What I normally do is one of the "5qt oil change specials" and go with Mobile 1 oil and a Mobile 1 filter, plus another quart of oil and a bottle of STP oil additive. Costs me like $45 every 6 months.
