MPG has ALWAYS been an elusive thing and sometimes hard to understand.

Case in point; I had a 67 Camero SS350 set up for the drags, cam, modified Quadrojet, 4.10 gears, 4-speed stick, low profile 60/15 tires. At 70 mph she ran at 4000 rpm. On several trips of about 350 miles from Syracuse to RI, I got 16 mpg. I thought, "NO. That can't be right." I was running the Thruway and Mass Pike over the Berkshires both ways. Fuel usage was computed by the refill and mileage formula. I checked the spark plugs to see if it was running lean and it wasn't. How could I possibly be getting that kind of mileage with a high performance much modified drag car? It still remains a mystery.

The point of this is a lot of times the driver has a lot to do with fuel mileage, especially in the city. I'm not saying you should drive like your grandmother, but excessive use of the throttle will increase your overall fuel usage.
