Default Baffled. Possible transmission problem?

Hi everyone, first time posting. This forum has been a great resource for me in the past. I've been doing a lot of research online including this for and I am out of ideas. A week ago my 96' grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 automatic 4WD transmission would stop engaging after a few miles of driving. The engine will will just rev with transmission no longer engaging. I drained ATF and put in new filter and pan gasket. Still having the same problem after few miles of driving. I can wait 20 minutes and the transmission will engage for a few miles then stop again. I'm hoping the tranny isn't toast. Are there any sensors related o the transmission I can troubleshoot. Thanks a head a time.

I recommend taking it to a transmission shop.

That will be my last resort. Will replace tranny before rebuilding it. But just want to make sure that is the issue

Sometimes the last resort is the best answer. They may find the problem to be a simple fix. Throwing parts that key board commandos recommend at it will cost you more money and time.

Appreciate your input. But these forums and its members haven't let me down in the past. Anyone have any other ideas?

Are you checking your fluid level in neutral? it makes quite a difference if you check in Park.
