Default Axle whine

hi all,
New to the forum and a new owner of a 4.7 overland GC 2002 with an axle whine between 65 and 75.
Is it safe to drive the car with the front prop removed to make sure the axle whine is from the rear? When I say safe just the fact that I won't damage the gearbox. The car is auto with quadra drive system.

Thanks Mac.

Welcome to CF!

I wouldn't do it. JMHO. Put it up on a lift while running and shift it into gear. You should be able to hear in from underneath. Without resistance, the transmission should shift up into O/D with the wheels turning fast. Just be sure to brake it to a stop before lowering the lift.

Will try this as a last ditch attempt but in the past (I was in the motor trade for 13 years) there is so much noise it's very hard to hear anything especially as the axles are not under load but thanks for the reply. Mac

Use a piece of heater hose against the diff and your ear. You can have the person in the car ride the brake to put a little load on the gears.

Yes thanks for the info. I have an engineering stethoscope that picks up noises and such, will try it and let you know how I get on. Mac
