1997 grand cherokee whining
My grand Cherokee starts whining around 30-40 mph. The faster the louder. Was just wondering if my off-road tires are whining that loud. It if it's something more serious

This is sort of an odd question. If it didn't whine before you put on the off-road tires, of course it's the tires!

Oh. Different horse, different color! Does the whine change with power setting? You know, power on, power off? If not, it's probably the tires.
My '97 ZJ whined at about 45 and above but was most noticeable on deceleration. If it has the Selectrac 242 t/case, most of the driving is in 2WD so the rear diff gets a lot more wear. That D35 axle isn't the strongest thing around. Mine started whining after 185K miles.

Whining could very well be the rear end. Bad pinion bearings whining, or a lose carrier could be making the gears whine. This is especially true if its only noticeable or much louder when you let off the gas.
