Well, that's no bueno! The 94 trans is a 46RH, while the 96 is a 44RE. So for either of them to be swapped you would have to bring over OBD I or OBD II, and perform a complete wiring harness swap as well. ZJ's are a dime a dozen at a pull a part yourself, go grab yourself the lowest mileage tranny you can find, unless you want to spend countless hours messing with the wiring harness.

On another note, you said both of these V8 ZJ's have NP242's? That was never a stock option, if they are truly NP242's, then they were swapped out from NP249.

The spline count will be the same, it's the gear cut that changed in the 94.5 model year.

Okay- here is a cross over problem for me- I am working on XJs, ZJs and YJs today.

Both of these transfer cases are tagged as 231J, both of them have 21 splines. the vacuum gauges on the YJ 231 J are on the front of the case

Old wrangler case behind 5 speed AX5:

Finally got the tag cleaned up enough- the "new" 231 is an 89 on the tag- the 231 in the wrangler is tagged as a 93.

Insides of the "new" 231. Looks brand new with heavy duty chain!

the input shafts look identicle- so that is something.

Old auto trans I found, with the 231 on it. unknown vehicle.

I forget what year vehicle you're switching these into, but you will need to watch the gear cut. Sometime during the 94 build year, supposedly later in the year, the cut of the input gear on the TC was changed. You'll have to make sure the trans and input gear cut match.

the TC is a 93 and 89, should be safe! Slid the input shaft of the 93 on to that auto trans (the one in the pic) and it seems to fit perfect.

Reviving again and old chat LOL. Learned so much since all this! My ZJ has an AW4 BTW. It's a 92.
