Default Air intake help needed

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo which i just installed a k & N air intake on. It sounds ok until i hit the gas even a little gas makes a backfire sound, more then a little gas will make it die out. there is a couple millimeter gap in one section of the gasket, but otherwise all is good. I was wondering if the gap in the gasket would cause this, or if it's because i only have a stock exhaust system? I am on a time limit to get it fixed as i will be moving soon and need to pull a trailer across the country. Any help or ideas would be much apreciated.

I dont think a KN will make your backfire,, if it feels like its going to die,,, maybe the filter has too much oil and that is been suck into the engine,, those KN filters uses oil and sometimes they come with too much,,, hope that helps,, if not well someone else will help soon dont worry about it

K&N won't cause a backfire...at least not to my knowledge. Check your timing

I wonder if you have a vacum line off after taking the stock air intake out. You did not say what engine you have.

assuming it's a 5.2L V8, here's the firing order...

Later.

WJ thanks again, and to all the others also. A quick update to all, after talking with some of the guys here it seems it is from when i changed the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires, and not the air intake. I had found the diagram that WJ just posted for me earlier today and tried it and it seemed to run worse then what it is at now. I don't quite understand it though, i have done tune ups many times in my life and it ran fine before i did this one. I just did the tune up on it because i always do wheni buy a new vehicle (I just bought 2 of these same year, make, and model excluding my wifes is a v6 and mines a v8) the tune up on hers went fine. I did however mark the wires wrong when i pulled them off and was unable to see which direction the distributor cap was when i pulled it off due to the location being behind the engine. The parts i bought were all higher end then normal. I had treid it with the distributor cap the other direction but had worse results. It doesn't sound like it's missing or anything is wrong until i hit the gas then it sputters/backfires and if i hit the gas hard it will die. If anyone has any other ideas or can provide pics of there distributor cap where the wiring is runing from it to the plugs, or diagrams it would be very helpful and much apreciated. This site is great, everyone i met here seems knowledgeable and helpful and it has been nice to meet you all. Thanks again.

If it is idling fine I would not think it is the dist/plug wires....it sounds like maybe you knocked a vaccum line off while installing the air intake or one of the lines is dry rotted and has a hole in it.

You may be out one set of holes on the cap. I know its tight in there but if you take the cap off, pull number one plug and stick your finger in the hole and turn it over you will see exactly where the rotor is pointing as it make compression. I have seen it where it the gear in the motor is out and you need to move the wires one step over, it can idle fine but will do the back fire when you rev it up. just throughing ideas,

another more simple mistake can be not being able to follow the wires all the way and you may just have 2 crossed
